20. Jacqueline Voorhees (Jane Krakowski) on Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt 2013-2014 Rank: New Show Netflix's new comedy Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt seems to be about one character, Kimmy Schmidt. There are however a small amount of supporting characters that make the show that much more funny. Jane Krakowski returns to TV (if Netflix can be called that) as Jacqueline Voorhees, a rich housewife who employs Kimmy as a nanny. If you didn't know that this and 30 Rock were different shows, you might think Krakowski plays the same character she portrayed on 30 Rock, Jenna Maroney. That isn't necessarily a bad thing as she plays the role well. |
19. Carol Pilbasian (Kristen Schaal) on The Last Man On Earth 2013-2014 Rank: New Show If I had been doing these lists a few years earlier than when I actually started, Kristen Schaal would have probably been near the top for a couple years. She portrayed the super (and only) fan of Bret and Jermaine on Flight of the Conchords. That is where I first began to enjoy her, even though she was a correspondent on the Daily Show for a while. Now she is back as one of the only remaining women left in the world on the show The Last Man On Earth. The first episode started with the lead character, Phil Miller, but by the end of the episode we are introduced to Schaal's character Carol. She is pretty annoying, which she plays well, but in a sweet way. Her penchant for hand-made clothes is pretty hilarious. The show has took some time to settle itself in as more characters were quickly introduced throughout the short first season. But Carol definitely brings many of the laughs on the show. |
18. Beth (Janeane Garofalo) on Wet Hot American Summer: First Day Of Camp 2013-2014 Rank: New Show Though this is a new show, technically Garofalo's Beth is not a new character. Wet Hot American Summer: First Day Of Camp is a prequel to the summer camp comedy film released in 2001. Garofalo returns as one of the head counselors of the camp, though we see in this prequel how she ends up solely in charge. |
17. Britta Perry (Gillian Jacobs) on Community 2013-2014 Rank: 18 (+1) I was watching old episodes of Community and realizing/remembering just how many of the original study group is gone. Britta is still her old self as the wannabe humanitarian/psychiatrist who just can't seem to get anything right. It continues to work for her, though it can sometimes get old which is why she doesn't climb much on my lists. She does get moments to shine and I do enjoy that. |
16. Mindy Lahiri (Mindy Kaling) on The Mindy Project 2013-2014 Rank: Unranked/Hardly Watched I have watched a few episodes here and there of the previous seasons of The Mindy Project, but I never really got sucked into it. I started watching it more last season with my girlfriend who enjoys it, and I mostly liked it. Mindy is a good main character and I enjoy about half of the supporting cast. It did take some interesting turns this past season with Mindy getting pregnant, but I think they were expecting to by cancelled. Which they were, until Hulu picked them up for another season. |
15. Beverly Goldberg (Wendi McLendon-Covey) on The Goldbergs 2013-2014 Rank: Didn't Watch Like Mindy, I had previously seen a few episodes of The Goldbergs but never stuck with it...until my girlfriend. That however has been a good thing (besides the relationship) as The Goldbergs is a very funny show. I have enjoyed it more than expected. One of the best parts about the show is the overbearing matriarch of the family, Beverly. She loves her three children and does everything she can to make sure they don't forget it. Plus, I love seeing a former Reno 911 cast member back on television in a good show. |
14. CeCe (Hanna Simone) on New Girl 2013-2014 Rank: 25 (+11) The past season, CeCe's main storyline was the fact that she realized how much she was not over Schmidt but couldn't be with him. I enjoyed her inner (and later more public) struggle with her feelings as she chose to try moving on since Schmidt hurt her. She still works well as Jess's best friend/sidekick, but I enjoy when she gets more focus. By the end of the season, things fell into place for her and Schmidt. |
13. Bernadette (Melissa Rauch) 12. Amy Farrah Fowler (Mayim Bialik) 11. Penny (Kaley Cuoco) on Big Bang Theory 2013-2014 Rank: 14, 13, 12 (+1) The ladies of Big Bang still get bunched up together as I feel no one of them much exceeds the other. That is not a problem as they feed off of each other well as the feminine side of the cast (well besides Raj). Before Bernie and Amy, it was tough to make Penny more than the attractive girl next store. Now they are a force to be reckoned with who could almost have a show on their own. Almost. As far as big moments, Penny is finally going to marry Leonard, Bernie and Howard are still happy (though sharing their house with Stuart) and Amy broke up with Sheldon since their relationship wasn't progressing. |
10. Donna Meagle (Retta) on Parks And Recreation 2013-2014 Rank: 17 (+7) It took a few seasons, but Donna definitely become a beloved must-have character within the parks department. Her one-liners, sassy attitude and of course "Treat Yo Self" will be missed. She always seemed too good for Pawnee, and in the end she was able to get the lifestyle she was meant for. |
9. Jessica Day (Zooey Deschanel) on New Girl 2013-2014 Rank: 11 (+2) This past season did the best job of focusing on everyone in the group that it has throughout the series. I like Jess, but without Schmidt, Nick, Coach, CeCe and even Winston, this should wouldn't be half as enjoyable. I enjoyed her new relationship with Ryan and was sad to see him go, but I suppose it wasn't meant to be. Things cannot be perfect for anyone within a comedy like New Girl that thrives on their struggles. |
8. Deandra Reynolds (Kaitlin Olson) on It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia 2013-2014 Rank: 6 (-2) Absolutely ZERO character development in ten seasons and it's probably for the best. How many times can Dee possibly be berated by the rest of the gang, or anyone else in life? We may never know the limit as Sunny keeps coming back for more. She did get a chance to see what life was like without the negativity of the group when her and Charlie hung out for a day by themselves. They realized everyone else pressures them to do things they don't want. In the end they hooked up...and were happy to have things go back to normal afterwards and forget about it. |
7. Detective Amy Santiago (Melissa Fumero) 6. Gina Linetti (Chelsea Peretti) 5. Detective Rosa Diaz (Stephanie Beatriz) on Brooklyn Nine-Nine 2013-2014 Rank: 9 (+2), 16 (+10), 10 (+5) The ladies of the Nine-Nine have hit their stride after the sophomore season of Brooklyn Nine-Nine. After one season, the characters had started becoming developed. I wasn't completely sure what my feelings were towards Gina, but definitely enjoyed Santiago and Diaz. Now I can say the show is always better with them involved. Within a good-sized ensemble cast with many strengths, you can mix and match the interactions each week. We often don't see the three of them together. But together, or with any of the guys, these ladies make for great laughs. I feel a bit lazy grouping them together just like the ladies of Big Bang, but it is well-deserved as they all feel like equals within their respective shows. |
4. Kimmy Schmidt (Ellie Kemper) on Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt 2013-2014 Rank: New Show One of the best new comedies this past year was probably Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, which shouldn't be a surprise when one of its co-creators in Tina Fey. I have to admit I was a little skeptical about Ellie Kemper headlining a show. Those unfamiliar with the name may remember her as the Pam's replacement at secretary of Dunder Mifflin in the later seasons of The Office, where Kemper played the very naïve and not-so-smart Erin. Of course her new role is quite similar in that I could believe that Erin actually was Kimmy Schmidt, a recently-escaped prisoner of a bunker where she was held captive for many years thinking the world had ended. Kemper plays the role well and I am glad that I was wrong about my doubts. The show is silly but also endearing and worth a watch. |
3. Annie Edison (Alison Brie) on Community 2013-2014 Rank: 5 (+2) Annie has always been an interesting yet integral part of the study group of Community throughout its six seasons. Everyone on the show is pretty silly and has some sort of personality trait to overcome, but Annie has always seemed like the most-grounded and relatable. The will they, won't they between her and Jeff has been teased throughout the series, but their admitted age difference kept them apart from each other. It was appropriate that in the end she would be offered a great opportunity that would take her away from Greendale. I say "in the end" since it seems the series is done, though technically it is still unknown. It was sad watching Jeff's realization in the end that he is watching someone he cares about leave and he failed to do anything about it, but it is probably for the best. |
2. April Ludgate (Aubrey Plaza) on Parks And Recreation 2013-2014 Rank: 3 (+1) It is difficult to not love April, even if she appears to not want you to. Her sarcasm and negative attitude took some turns through the series, and she ended up with some very happy situations in her life. She started as a reluctant intern, but would eventually find both success and love, plus some great friends. She happily married Andy and announced in the end they were moving to Washington D.C. Deep down April was always a truly good person and she deserves all the happiness that is coming her way. It doesn't mean she'll smile more, but we know she is inside. |
1. Leslie Knope (Amy Poehler) on Parks And Recreation 2013-2014 Rank: 1 (-) In the five years I've been writing these lists, Leslie has always been number one in the female comedy category. She is the heartbeat of Parks and Recreation and the center of everything good that has happened to people around her. She always dreamed of being in government and would go on to have a career in it. Besides her time in the Parks Department, she got to be on the city council and would later become Governor of Indiana. In a final scene of a flash forward, Leslie and Ben can be seen with secret service. We can interpret that as we want, but it's safe to say one of them probably becomes president in the future. |

23. Natasha (Conor Leslie) on Other Space

25. Dusty Halford (Malin Akerman) on Sin City Saints
