20. Kermit The Frog (Kermit The Frog) on The Muppets 2014-2015 Rank: NEW SHOW I think much like Miss Piggy on the Female Comedy list, Kermit is here out of nostalgia. I love the Muppets, but their new show just didn't catch on. I enjoyed watching them, but the laughs weren't quite there. Kermit is still great, and he was in charge of keeping things (especially Miss Piggy) in line while running her talk show. Of course Kermit and the rest of the Muppets will continue to live on in other formats even though the show was cancelled after one season. |
19. Adam Goldberg (Sean Giambrone) on The Goldbergs 2014-2015 Rank: UNRANKED An adult Adam is the narrator of The Goldbergs, so much of what we see is through his eyes. Adam must navigate being the youngest of three, a clingy mother and junior high through the last couple of seasons. This upcoming season will find Adam entering High School while his older siblings are upper classman. I'm sure his continued awkward growth will keep bringing the laughs. Highlight of last season...Adam getting to meet one of his (and my) idols...Weird Al! |
18. Erlich Bachman (T.J. Miller) on Silicon Valley 2014-2015 Rank: 13 (-5) Though Erlich always manages to get in the way more than he believes, he always finds a way of truly contributing. This past season Erlich tried to take advantage of Big Head and become business partners with him (with Big Head fronting all of the money). Erlich really messed up and almost cost Richard and the boys Pied Piper. He was however able to save the day in the end as he purchased Pied Piper when all seemed lost and helped them become privately owned again. |
17. Mac (Rob McElhenney) on It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia 2014-2015 Rank: 16 (-1) Season 11 was another strong season of It's Always Sunny. Amazingly the formula remains the same after 11 years but continues to be hilarious. One of my favorite Mac moments was him and Dennis moving to the suburbs (just to prove a point) and Mac basically becoming a jealous housewife. |
16. Donald 'Jared' Dunn (Zach Woods) on Silicon Valley 2014-2015 Rank: 27 (+11) One of the funnier quotes from season 2 of Silicon Valley was a simple one, and spoken about Jared by Russ Hanneman. The abrasive and rich mogul who purchased Pied Piper for that season simply looked at Jared and said "This guy f***s." It was especially funny since though every one of the Pied Piper team is awkward and struggles with women, Jared is probably the weirdest one. But then something magical happened this past season (season three). Jared had pointed out that he chooses not to date because he puts the company first, but then was told to go ahead and start dating. Of course no one thought anything of it, until it turned out Jared was bringing home girls every night. And he sleeps on a cot in the garage! That and when each member was given 10 logins for their Beta, Jared struggled to choose which 10 people where Dinesh couldn't fill in his accounts. Russ was right, "This guy f***s." |
15. Winston Bishop (Lamorne Morris) on New Girl 2014-2015 Rank: 18 (+3) Winston is now a full time police officer, which seems crazy considering how crazy he is. But he is apparently pretty good at his job. We don't spend much time seeing him (or really any of the guys) at their jobs, though once in a while it becomes a focal point of an episode. Winston's big story this season was him having feelings for his partner. He seemed forever in the partner/friend zone until late in the season when she broke up with her boyfriend and confessed she like Winston. They seem happy now, but I imagine it will become an issue at some point mixing work and play. |
14. Titus Andromedon (Titus Burgess) on Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt 2014-2015 Rank: 21 (+7) Everything about Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt is silly and every character contributes to that in some way or another. But if there is one character that is the most outrageous, it has to be Titus. Kimmy's roommate is a poor aspiring Broadway (but in his case way, way off-Broadway) actor. Nothing has ever seemed stable in his life, and we even learned this season about how he ran away from his old life on his wedding day to go to New York. He did however find some stability in a new boyfriend, a construction worker who is dating a man for the first time. He often acts annoyed with Kimmy but deep down he cares deeply for her. He was offered a job on a cruise ship but got hilariously distracted on his way when he stumbled upon Titusville, FL and took it as a sign. But really he is always looking for reasons for things to not work out and his recent happiness is confusing to him. |
13. Phil Tandy Miller (Will Forte) 12. Mike Miller (Jason Sudeikis) on The Last Man On Earth 2014-2015 Rank: 31 (+18), New Character Phil will forever be the most annoying character on The Last Man On Earth, but somehow he still comes off as one of the most likeable. He definitely changed his ways a bit in the second season, committing fully to Carol as his wife and trying to show that he wants to belong with the group. He was challenged early in the season by the other Phil Miller, but when he died there was a void to be filled and Phil/Tandy did his best to do so. He was then reunited with his brother who had been isolated from the virus while in space but made his way back to Earth to find his brother. But his brother Mike was much more likeable and Phil/Tandy struggled with that as everyone liked his brother more. They would eventually make amends, sadly just in time for Mike to start becoming sick. As the season came to a close, it looked like Mike was probably going to pass away and left in their family home to be at peace. We don't know for sure if he's actually sick from the virus or if maybe he'll return later. Without a body I'm never fully convinced on TV. As a side note, it was great seeing Will Forte (Phil/Tandy) and Jason Sudeikis working together again. They were on SNL at the same time and were partners in one of my favorite reoccurring skits at the time, the obscure women's sports commentators sponsored by unfortunate products. Hilarious stuff. |
11. Rodrigo (Gael Garcia Bernal) on Mozart In The Jungle 2014-2015 Rank: 30 (+19) I admit that Rodrigo's ranking probably is influenced by my biased enjoyment of actor Gael Garcia Bernal, but it is more than that. Rodrigo brings much of the fun to Mozart In The Jungle. I do enjoy Malcolm McDowell's Thomas as well, but Rodrigo is certainly the focal point of the show (on the male side). He is an eccentric composer who cares very much about the music, but also this orchestra that brings the music to life. There is definitely chemistry between him and his former assistant turned reserve Oboist Hailey, and we've now been teased with that twice. But there remains multiple obstacles and it will for now remain a will they/won't they situation that is common in many shows. I first started watching the show for him, and I will continue to watch (though there's more to enjoy than just one person). |
10. Captain Ray Holt (Andre Braugher) on Brooklyn Nine-Nine 2014-2015 Rank: 20 (+10) Though I rank three of the male characters together and higher on the list, Captain Holt is also very deserving of being on this list. Much of the humor comes from the shenanigans of his officers (and Gina), but his unique character and authority figure cannot be missed. There was a period of time when he was sent to work elsewhere, which offered a rotating door of figureheads much like The Office did after Michael Scott left. And that can be fun for a bit, but when he returned it made everything a bit better. His relationship with Peralta especially is a highlight of the show. |
9. Louis Huang (Randall Park) on Fresh Off The Boat 2014-2015 Rank: UNRANKED Louis tries so hard to 1. Be a successful American business owner and 2. Be a great Dad. I would say he is definitely a good Dad but his wife does much of the work. As far as his business, Cattleman's Ranch seems to do OK and he at least enjoys his job. But often his ambitions, whether in the business world, social world or at home, often are not fully achieved. He does his best though. |
8. Barry Goldberg (Troy Gentile) on The Goldbergs 2014-2015 Rank: UNRANKED Barry is a self-proclaimed awesome, athletic, smart and all-round cool guy. However in reality he is probably average or worse in all those categories. Barry does however mean well, but sadly ends up being the butt of many jokes. It's all for the best of the show however, and as a viewer I think he is definitely at least awesome. Somehow at school he doesn't get picked on, but I think everyone finds him lovable and fun to be around. |
7. Dev (Aziz Ansari) on Master Of None 2014-2015 Rank: NEW SHOW Though Aziz Ansari's Tom Haverford no longer exists thanks to Parks and Recreation ending last year, Aziz immediately returns to my Top Male Comedy Characters list. This is all thanks to his new Netflix show Master Of None, which he created and stars in. Dev is an Indian-American actor living in New York City who is mostly living off a commercial paycheck but still always looking to breakout. Unfortunately for him, as is explored in one episode, there are not many opportunities for Indians in acting. They smartly point out the stereotypes and even unfortunate castings of "Indian" characters. Overall, Dev is likeable and not so cartoonish as Tom Haverford. |
6. Sergeant Terry Jeffords (Terry Crews) 5. Detective Charles Boyle (Joe Lo Truglio) 4. Detective Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg) on Brooklyn Nine-Nine 2014-2015 Rank: 7 (+1), 5 (-), 6 (+2) The boys of Brooklyn Nine-Nine return to the near top of this list. Terry, Charles and Jake continue to be a great team of characters (especially with the inclusion of Amy, Rosa, Gina and Holt). It is hard to pick one who stands out so much more than the others, but I would say Jake (who is supposed to be the star of the show) is the heartbeat and the show wouldn't be the same without him. Interesting side note...I just learned (thanks to Chelsea Peretti visiting Conan) that her and Andy Samberg were childhood friends. And on Brooklyn Nine-Nine Jake and Gina grew up together. That's a fun connection to the real world. |
3. Charlie Kelly (Charlie Day) on It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia 2014-2015 Rank: 10 (+7) What can I say, Charlie continues to be Charlie and that bodes well for the gang of It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia. "Charlie Catches A Leprechaun" and "The Gang Hits The Slopes" were especially standout episodes for Charlie. When the gang goes to a ski mountain in Pennsylvania, the episode quickly becomes a spoof of an 80's raunchy ski comedy. This includes a rich mogul looking to tear down the ski resort (Frank with Dennis and a gang of speed suit-wearing henchmen), the slacker ski-instructors who want to fight to keep the mountain open (which Dee and Mac team up with) and Charlie stuck in the middle. In fact Charlie is running around confused most of the time because nobody is noticing the PA announcer is basically narrating their story and knows their names. He also gets probably the most explicit sex scene the show has ever done in a hot tub and on a bear skin rug, complete with sexy saxophone playing. In "Charlie Catches A Leprechaun," Charlie does just as the title implies. A thieving Leprechaun is caught in one of Charlie's traps in the basement of Paddy's. |
2. Nick Miller (Nick Johnson) 1. Schmidt (Max Greenfield) on New Girl 2014-2015 Rank: 8 (+6), 2 (+1) Nick and Schmidt are both mostly-equally awesome, and it comes as no surprise that they have been best friends since college. This past season they entered a big step together, co-investing in the bar Nick works at. It actually is a smart idea (aside from the going into business with a friend plan). The one thing Nick seems to be good at and care about is the bar, and he can manage it quite well. And Schmidt is happy to find an investment that he can go in on with his friend. Besides that, Nick met Reagan (Megan Fox) and they fell for each other while Schmidt married CeCe. No big deal. |

22. Bertram Gilfoyle (Martin Starr) on Silicon Valley
23. Murray Goldberg (Jeff Garlin) on The Goldbergs
