20. Sir Malcolm Murray (Timothy Dalton) on Penny Dreadful 2014-2015 Rank: Previously Didn't Watch Sir Malcolm Murray, played by the wonderful Timothy Dalton, is an explorer who specializes in Africa. He has seen many things in his lifetime, and done almost as many questionable things. Sir Malcolm starts off the show looking for his daughter, who was kidnapped by creatures of the night. In the process, he assembles a group of unique individuals who help him form what turns into a team that fights evil creatures. He certainly isn't an image of "good," but he works as the perfect flawed father figure to lead this group. |
19. Samwell Tarly (John Bradley) on Game Of Thrones 2014-2015 Rank: 13 (-6) Near the end of the previous season, Sam departs The Wall for Oldtown to study at the Citadel to eventually replace Maester Aemon as the Maester of the Watch. He left just before most of the Watch turns on Jon and kills him. Had he been there, he would certainly have stood by Jon's side, but maybe its best he wasn't there. And since he left, Jon has also risen from the dead, left the Watch and led an army of the North to fight the Boltons and take back Winterfell. But instead of being involved in all of that, Sam visited his family at Horn Hill, where he finds disappointment from his father and brother. He then leaves, but not before stealing his father's Valyrian sword, and heads for the Citadel at Oldtown. A mostly uneventful season for Sam, though we do get to see where he comes from and why he must continue on the path he is on. |
18. The Monarch (Christopher McCulloch) on The Venture Bros. 2014-2015 Rank: Haven't Watched In Several Years It had been many years since I had watched new seasons of The Venture Bros. But since they are released every few years, I haven't missed too much. Besides a complete change in setting to New York City, the other big change is that The Monarch is accidentally falling into a hero roll which has been nothing short of amusing. I always loved Brock and Dr. Orpheus (who wasn't around this season), but the Monarch is definitely a fun character. He discovers below his house a cave with a hidden lair, similar to the bat cave. This lair houses was the home base of the Blue Morpho, who was a hero many years ago. It turns out the Blue Morpho was The Monarch's father, which is a startling revelation for him. He tries out the persona, but not with the intention of doing good. He starts targeting other villains to preserve his role as Dr. Venture's arch nemesis, but in turn is eliminating villains like a good guy. It'll be fun to see how much he transitions in this role. |
17. Tormund Giantsbane (Kristofer Hivju) on Game Of Thrones 2014-2015 Rank: 17 (-) Tormund has become an unlikely ally, and right-hand man to Jon Snow. The wildling has seen what Jon has done to keep his word, protect his people and just generally be a moral person. A funny thing happened this season when Brienne of Tarth arrive at Castle Black. Tormund layed eyes on her and appeared to be instantly in love. He can't seem to handle this large, strong woman who he no doubt sees as a worthy companion. They didn't really interact, aside from some glares from Tormund and questionable looks back from Brienne. |
16. Richie Gecko (Zane Holtz) 15. Seth Gecko (D.J. Cotrona) on From Dusk Til Dawn 2014-2015 Rank: Series didn't air last year, #19 and #18 in 2013-2014 As the first season of From Dusk Til Dawn came to a close, the Gecko brothers were headed in different directions. Richie is partnered up with Santanico and they start figuring out how to take down the Nine Lords who have long enslaved Santanico. Richie is in hiding with Kate, while Kate is trying to figure out how to save her brother who was turned. Eventually Seth and Richie cross paths again, and although they seem to dislike each other, they decide they need each other for what ends up being similar goals. |
14. Frank Castle/Punisher (Jon Bernthal) on Daredevil 2014-2015 Rank: NEW CHARACTER By the end of the first season of Daredevil, most of the major villains were either killed or in jail. So season two had to find a way to bring in new characters and challenges for Daredevil. It is safe to say the show did a fine job, introducing a menacing and mysterious group known as The Hand, and two characters who walked on both sides of the law in Elektra and Frank Castle (aka The Punisher). The Punisher is a well-known character who has appeared in a few films over the year, but it seems there hasn't been much love for those renditions. Personally I enjoyed the Tom Jane and Ray Stevenson portrayals of Frank Castle (and never saw Dolph Lundgren's version), but Jay Bernthal in Daredevil has been brilliant. It was a great casting choice, and Bernthal brings all of the pain and anger to the character that you would expect. He at first seems like an enemy, but later becomes more understood by our hero. He will next appear in his own series, though I do not know much about it. |
13. Dr. Victor Frankenstein (Harry Treadaway) on Penny Dreadful 2014-2015 Rank: Previously Didn't Watch In Penny Dreadful, Dr. Frankenstein is portrayed as a young doctor who is secretly experimenting with creating life. He has actually brought life to a few characters, and two of them become very important to the series. Frankenstein seems like he wants to do good, but often struggles to walk a fine line of moral well-being. He most recently brought to life a woman who he pretended was his cousin in public settings, but fell in love her before realizing she was manipulating him for her benefit. And outside of these personal endeavors, he has become a trusted ally with Vanessa Ives and Sir Malcolm Murray's battle against evil. |
12. James Cole (Aaron Stanford) on 12 Monkeys 2014-2015 Rank: 15 (+3) At the end of season one, James Cole was stuck in the past after sending Cassandra on his tether back to the future. She was in need of immediate medical attention and his expectation was that she could be taken care of back in his time. Of course he had no idea what that would mean for him and if he would ever get back. He soon learned however at the beginning of this season. Cassandra came back, but it wasn't until after she healed up and spent some time in the future. When they reunite, they find out they have different opinions on what their goals should be to prevent the virus. This led to plenty of drama throughout this season. |
11. Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson) on Daredevil 2014-2015 Rank: 10 (-1) Late in the first season of Daredevil, lawyer Foggy Nelson discovered that his partner and close friend Matt Murdock has a secret...that he is Daredevil. Throughout this second season, Matt's extracurricular activities became more and more distracting and affected their day job as lawyers. It reached a point where Foggy had no choice but to pull the plug on their practice and spend some time a part. What Foggy didn't know was that Matt was specifically keeping his distance to protect the people closest to him. |
10. Pablo Simon Bolivar (Ray Santiago) on Ash Vs Evil Dead 2014-2015 Rank: NEW SHOW Pablo looks like he is both the person having the most fun and the person most terrified on Ash Vs Evil Dead. He partnered up with his coworkers Ash and Kelly to fight a legion of the Dead as they are trying to get to Ash and open up the gates of Hell. Pablo is tormented throughout the first season as he likes Kelly (and the demons use that against him) and his Uncle is killed while trying to help them. |
9. Cassidy (Joseph Gilgun) 8. Jesse Custer (Dominic Cooper) on Preacher 2014-2015 Rank: NEW SHOW I really enjoyed the first season of Preacher, and a big part of that had to do with two of the lead characters. Cassidy is a vampire who has happened upon Jesse Custer's church in Texas. The two of them become pseudo-friends, but their bond doesn't really grow until they share their secrets with each other. Cassidy is a fun, and often crazy character who brings much of the humor that exists on the show. Jesse is more serious, but of course he is dealing with the realization that he has the power to make people do what he wants. By the end of the first season, most everything we've experienced in the first season is destroyed and the two of them (along with gal-pal Tulip) hit the road to assumingly fight evil and try to save a boy that Jesse accidentally sent to Hell. |
7. Daryl Dixon (Norman Reedus) on The Walking Dead 2014-2015 Rank: 4 (-3) Daryl has long been the most likeable character (especially on the Male side) in The Walking Dead, and that remains true. He does everything he can to be a good person and help his group, as well as others in need. Unfortunately that backfired as he helped a couple who stole his motorcycle and crossbow, and then the man (Dwight) would later turn out to be a member of the saviors. He repeatedly became a menace and even used his crossbow to kill the innocent doctor Denise. Daryl clearly blames himself and struggles with that. He was then captured by the saviors and brought to the final scene of the season where someone in our beloved group was going to be killed by Negan. |
6. Ethan Chandler (Josh Hartnett) on Penny Dreadful 2014-2015 Rank: Previously Didn't Watch Ethan Chandler is an American West six-shooting showman who travels to London with a touring group. While there, he meets Sir Malcolm Murray and Vanessa Ives and becomes involved in a war against evil forces. What his new friends don't know at first is that Ethan has a secret. They would later find out he is actually a werewolf. He would go on to be a vital piece of their operation and even seem to fall in love with Ms. Ives. Unfortunately some of his past demons caught up with him and he was escorted back to America where he spent a majority of the final season. Though I was interested in the storyline, I would have preferred him staying in London if they knew it was going to be the final season. |
5. Captain Hook/Killian (Colin O'Donoghue) on Once Upon A Time 2014-2015 Rank: 2 (-3) The first half of this past season found the group trying to remember what happened while they were in Camelot. They had been trying to find a way to help Emma since she sacrificed herself in becoming the Dark One to help her family and friends. Hook tried to do everything he could to save his love, but it would cost Hook his life. Of course this is Once Upon A Time, so you never know what can happened. The second half of the season found the group travelling to the Underworld to save Hook, while also facing a new foe in Hades (and other former enemies that had previously died). Hook would later sacrifice himself, but in doing so proved worthy of being brought back to life by Zeus. So Hook sort of died twice, but is still alive. |
4. Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage) on Game Of Thrones 2014-2015 Rank: 5 (+1) After Daenerys was whisked away by one of her dragons, Tyrion was left to rule over Meereen in her absence. So Tyrion, along with Lord Varys, Missendei and Grey Worm, did his best to govern a peaceful city. Of course Meereen is far from peaceful and things became ugly pretty fast. Lucky for Tyrion, Daenerys returned just in time with her dragon and a new army of Dothraki to help shut down the opposition and begin their march to Westeros. |
3. Matt Murdock/Daredevil (Charlie Cox) on Daredevil 2014-2015 Rank: 1 (-2) The second season of Daredevil was a challenging time for Matt Murdock. He started the season dealing with a mercenary known as The Punisher, then moved his focused towards supernatural organization The Hand. He also reconnected with a former flame in Elektra, who it turns out is fighting a similar battle with The Hand. Because of the increased focused on bigger situations, his social and professional life as Matt Murdock took a hit. He was forced to shut down his law firm with longtime partner and friend Foggy. |
2. Ash Williams (Bruce Campbell) on Ash Vs Evil Dead 2014-2015 Rank: NEW SHOW One of my unofficial favorite movie characters of all time, who has not been seen since the 90s, has arrived to television! Ash, the lead character of the Evil Dead trilogy, fronts a new series on Starz...Ash Vs Evil Dead! The series takes place about the same amount of time in the future as we are from the release of Evil Dead films. Ash is still working at Value Stop and is now middle-aged. The first episode finds him facing the dilemma of the evil he once faced returning after many years. He teams up with two of his young co-workers and they embark on an adventure to find a way to stop evil. Bruce Campbell is his usual charismatic and campy self in the role that made him famous, and it is perfect! |
1. Jon Snow (Kit Harrington) on Game Of Thrones 2014-2015 Rank: 3 (+1) At the end of the previous season of Game of Thrones, the final season ended with a collective *GASP* from everyone watching. Jon Snow, who seemed destined to be the hero we are looking for through the rest of the series, was blindsided by many of his black-cloaked brothers and murdered. The questions rang throughout the following Summer, Fall and Winter...is Jon Snow actually gone for good? After one episode of the new season it was still unclear. But in the waning moments of episode 2, there was yet another powerful *GASP*, this time from Jon Snow himself as he was brought back to life. This led to a series of big events throughout the season... the execution of those who turned against him (including young Ollie), Jon's withdrawal from the Night's Watch ("My watch has ended"), his reunion with Sansa and the Battle of the Bastards which resulted in the death of his younger brother Rickon and their nemesis Ramsay Bolton. Oh, and I shouldn't forget the reveal of the biggest non-secret of the series, that Jon is not Eddard Stark's son but his nephew. I'd say Jon is still on the fast track to being the big hero of the series, though there are some major obstacles in the way. Cersei has taken over the throne in King's Landing, the White Walkers are marching south as Winter has finally arrived, and there's a certain Mother of Dragons sailing across the narrow sea with an army. Though she shares an enemy with Jon Snow, she also considers his family partly to blame for her family's demise. |

23. Jose Ramse (Kirk Acevedo) on 12 Monkeys
24. David/Prince Charming (Josh Dallas) on Once Upon A Time
